Piecing Together the Parts of Holistic Pet Care

The Holistic Pet Center in Clackamas, Oregon Gives Back to the Community

Clackamas, OR – Chip Sammons opened the doors to the Holistic Pet Center in Clackamas, Oregon, a suburb of Portland, in 1988 when he couldn’t find acceptable diet options for his dog who had developed cancer at the age of four.

“When the store first opened, we were the only store of our kind, and we remain the only store with such rigid criteria. People come here because they know all my employees are passionate, very well educated, and offer so much information,” Sammons says. “We’ve really become a destination.”

Sammons read everything he could find on pet diet and health - discovering that artificial preservatives, byproducts, sugar, nitrates, artificial colors and flavors can have serious and even harmful effects on pets.

Being an avid researcher, Sammons makes careful and practiced decisions about the foods and products he stocks in his store from the holistic perspective, as his customers have come to rely on the store’s experience and commitment over the years. He doesn’t choose products by what happens to be popular, but by what he sees firsthand really working for his customers - basing his choices not only on ingredients but also on performance as well as the company behind the products.

“Natura Pet Products is one of the leading companies I have come to respect through my eighteen years in the industry. I really honor John and Ann Rademakers and Peter Atkins, who actually had the vision to build their own plant so they could control their own quality,” Sammons says. “I’m into the people in the industry as well as the products. I want to stock good products made by good people. To me, that’s a truly holistic approach to my business.”

Says Peter Atkins, CEO and co-founder of Natura Pet Products, “A pet’s diet, the biggest health variable controlled by human companions, is crucial to his or her overall well-being. Natura creates foods that are denser and richer in nutrients so your pet gets more nutrition from less food. We are dedicated to making our pet foods with the highest quality ingredients, which is why Natura Pet is at the leading edge of pet health care. The bottom line is, if I wouldn’t eat it, why would I want to feed it to my pet?”
